Today we’d like to introduce you to LaRod Jones.
LaRod, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far. I am a Music Producer originally from Chicago. I would say my curiosity for music emerged at seven years old. I witnessed two of my uncles record a song called “On The Mic”, at that moment they were bigger than life to me. It was then, I knew I wanted to be involved with music. My first experience of creating music happened at the age of nine. I remember the excitement of plugging up my grey and black Casio keyboard. I challenged myself to learn different songs, I would play that keyboard endlessly. As time moved on, I relocated to Memphis at the age of 14. A new direction in life led me to a new direction in focus, namely football. During high school, music was still around but more-so a hobby.
It wasn’t until my freshman year of college, where it became evident that music was the path I was destined for. I sacrificed meals to travel for music exposure and opportunities, with barely $20 in my pocket to see me through the week. I was no stranger to sacrificing. I’ve done it all my life for my family. But this time, I was sacrificing for me.
Has it been a smooth road? The main struggles I faced were within myself. I loved music but didn’t believe I could do it full time. I found that I lacked the confidence because my music didn’t sound like what’s “common” or “current” for the South. But I forced myself to make a decision, either pursue music with every ounce of me or let it go completely. I gambled on myself. Throughout this journey, I’ve seen my darkest days, not only financially but in every conceivable way. I’ve even had music stolen from me. Some days, I wouldn’t even eat. Despite the lows, I’ve had amazing highs. These highs inspired confidence within myself as well as my music. Undeniably showing, I am heading in the right direction. With that, I wouldn’t change any of it because I’ve survived my best and worst days. Throughout it all, music has seen me through. I’ve learned even witness how great things can turn out when you finally believe in yourself.
LJ1SProductions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition? My company name is LJ1SProductions. I am a Music Producer and Music Engineer. However, I specialize in music production. I am known to have a soulful yet somewhat dark sound to my production. My proudest moment so far has to be teaming up with my “Producer Brothers”, as we like to call ourselves, to create Steaksawse and to witness the growth amongst us three. The thing that sets me apart, I feel is my character and dedication. I feel my integrity speaks for itself, as well as the company I associate myself with. I approach every project that requires my attention as if it were my own. I truly do love Music, I believe in it, It is my Religion!
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade? Within the next 5-10 years I see, not only myself but Steaksawse as a whole being an integral part in the grand scheme of pushing the culture of music forward. One way being challenging ourselves and even others to take what music was, is now and what it could be in the future and expound upon it. Confronting the world to embrace originality. All the while creating the new generation, laying to rest the notion that certain genres of music belong to certain genres of people. There’s no box when it comes to creating music. At least it uses to be that way. Furthermore, proving my point.
