Today we’d like to introduce you to KingPin Da’ Composer.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. I’m KingPin Da’ Composer, musician/producer/event planner. My musical journey started at five years old as a drummer for my grandmother’s church. During that time, my time as a drummer continued on through middle and high school participating in marching band, to my adult years playing for various musical group throughout the city. I say around 2008, my passion for music production grew and I started taking music production serious. From 2008 to 2010, I put in endless hours to enhance my skills in music production. In 2010, I started producing music on a more professional level and began working with a lot of indie talent here in Memphis. Around 2017, I started a beat battle league (#LetsGetLOUD) where a numerous amount of producers have displayed their production skills and networked with other producers and artists. That same year I formed a production team (Steaksawse Produtions) comprised of Sunny Dizzle and LJ1S.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? I feel achieving a goal is never an easy feat. With reaching goals comes a resistance period designed to make you stronger, and I relate wholeheartedly. The music business is like any other business; you have your highs and your lows. However, being an indie producer, those lows can really hit you, especially if you’re still a part of the corporate world like myself. (artists missing deadlines, creative blocks, other creatives wanting “handouts”, etc.) Those can really put a strain on you mentally and creatively. With that in mind, I also welcome it because it’s a part of the process. True enough going through those hardships can put a weight on you, but it only makes you stronger.

Please tell us about KingPin Da’ Composer Productions. I’m a music producer with a background in hip hop and R&B. My time as a music producer has allowed me to delve into other genres (House and EDM being a couple of other genres I do.) Since I have such a strong background in percussion, the focal point of a lot of my production is indeed drums. I love sonics, but my drums have gotta hit you in the chest! In addition to KingPin Da’ Composer being a brand, creating the Steaksawse collective is also another major accomplishment. I must say I’ve grown tremendously as a producer because of it. LJ1S and Sunny Dizzle keep me on my toes.

My beat battle league (#LetsGetLOUD) is yet another accomplishment that I’m proud of. Memphis is very musically rich city, but a lot of the producers who primarily do Hip Hop didn’t have a dedicated community to network within. We had events here and there but didn’t have a community. I’m proud to say I provided that for the city and I’m overjoyed to see its growth.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood? I have so many, but the one I cherish the most is the time my grandparents bought me my first drum set. It was that moment where my musical journey started.
